The Insurance Commissioner enforces the California Insurance Code, regulates the insurance industry, and oversees the Department of Insurance.

The Department of Insurance regulates the largest insurance market in the United States with over $118 billion in direct premiums written in the state. The Department conducts examinations and investigations of insurance companies and producers to ensure that operations are consistent with the requirements of the Insurance Code and that insurance companies are financially able to meet their obligations to policyholders and claimants.
